Racecar driver killed in crash at Pa. track

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Sprint car driver James Campbell Jr. was killed Friday night in a crash at Williams Grove Speedway.

The Cumberland County Coroner's Office said Campbell, 45, from Feasterville, died after striking the wall on the half-mile banked clay oval.

The accident happened during warm-up laps.

Cassie Reese witnessed the crash and told CBS affiliate WHP that the car started smoking, flipped and caught on fire. Two other cars were involved in the accident.

The speedway canceled the rest of Friday's program (promoted as Kids' Night) after the accident and issued a statement: "The staff and management of Williams Grove Speedway express and extend sincere sympathy to the Campbell family at this difficult time."

Saturday's races were also canceled, "out of the utmost respect for the Campbell family as well as for all speedway employees, staff, management and emergency personnel as they all attempt to deal with the tragedy at hand."

WHP in Harrisburg reports that a crew member said Campbell appeared to have medical issues before the accident. The driver's medical condition before the crash has not been confirmed.
