Poll: Most say Trump will do a good job as president

A majority of people in the U.S. said they believe that President-elect Donald Trump will do a very or fairly good job as president, according to a CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday.

The poll found 53 percent said he’ll do a very or fairly good job while 44 percent said he will do a fairly or very poor job.

His favorable rating has increased to 47 percent, the poll found, while 50 percent view Mr. Trump unfavorably.

Forty percent said they have deep confidence in Mr. Trump to handle the U.S. economy, but 34 percent said they have no real confidence in him on that issue. Half of Americans said it’s likely that Mr. Trump will defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and “drain the swamp” in Washington to get rid of corruption. Close to half, 48 percent, said it’s likely that he’ll build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Almost half, 49 percent, said they have no real confidence in him handling foreign policy while 27 percent said they have a lot of faith in him. Twenty-three percent said they have some confidence.

Nearly two-thirds said they expect the economy to be in good shape a year from now and about half of Americans believe the country will be better off by 2020. Forty-six percent said they think it will be worse off four years from now and 3 percent predicted it would be about the same.

The poll comes after a separate survey released Monday found Hillary Clinton received higher post-election grades than Mr. Trump.

The poll surveyed 1,003 adults between Nov. 17 and 20 with a 3 percentage point margin of error.
