Police: Man stabbed stranger to death at N.Y. supermarket
NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. - A man is dead and a suspect is under arrest after a fatal stabbing inside an upstate New York supermarket, CBS New York reported.
New Windsor Police Sgt. Stephen Sager said in a statement that 35-year-old Andrew Goodenough was arrested inside a Shoprite supermarket on Saturday morning.
Goodenough faces a second-degree murder charge. The name of an attorney to comment was not immediately available.
Police said they found a 35-year-old victim stabbed and unconscious inside the store at about 9:40 a.m. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released, pending notification of kin.
According to police, Goodenough quietly walked behind the victim in the produce aisle and sliced his neck with a box-cutter, then walked away, CBS New York reported. Officials said there was no altercation, no argument and no apparent connection between the two men.
Police quickly sealed the store with some 250 people inside and after 45 minutes they found the suspect trying to blend in like a regular shopper.
"We can confirm that an unfortunate incident took place this morning at our store. The store will remain closed for the rest of the day while police conduct a thorough investigation. While we can't discuss the ongoing investigation, we are working with the police and reaching out to all of our associates. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved," Shoprite told customers in a statement.
Nobody answered the door at the suspect's apartment, just a short walk from the crime scene. Neighbors described him as a troubled man.
"I stopped hanging out with him because he does flip, he does like a 180," neighbor Nelson Rios told CBS New York.
The neighbor said Goodenough's temper and strange threats of violence were too much.
"He's definitely unstable," Rios said.
New Windsor is about 65 miles north of New York City.
