Police: South Carolina man hugged child to death

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. - A South Carolina man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly squeezing a toddler to death in June of last year, reports CBS affiliate WLTX.

Robert Christian Kemp, 26, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 14-month-old Jaylen Harris, reports the station. Investigators concluded that Jaylen died from asphyxiation.

An arrest warrant said Kemp killed the child "by giving him a bear hug, squeezing the victim so tight that the victim stopped breathing as a result."

Authorities say they got a call on June 27th, 2013, that a child was unresponsive at a home in Orangeburg County, about 45 miles outside of Columbia.

Kemp told deputies he was playing with the child when he started to rub his eyes like he was tired, so he put the toddler in his crib on his back with his bottle, according to an incident report.

Kemp said he then went into the kitchen to do chores for a while, but realized he had not heard the toddler at all. He went into the bedroom and found the boy on his stomach with his hands balled into fists and unconscious.

Bond for Kemp was reportedly set at $10,000.
