Police may have prevented possible incident at Md. school

COCKEYSVILLE, Md. -- Law enforcement officers may have prevented a potentially dangerous situation for students at a local school after they found possible explosives and a gun at the home of a student, reports CBS Baltimore.

An investigation into multiple automobile thefts led to a 16-year-old boy and police went to interview him at his home. When they spoke to the teen, a sophomore at the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, he said he had plans to go into school with two explosive devices -- as well as a gun -- and wanted to "kill people."

The police officers then located the gun and explosives, calling the Baltimore County Police Hazardous Devices Team to dismantle the purported explosive devices.

"The first responding officer in this case did an exceptional job of police work, and thanks to his diligence we intervened in what could have been an extremely serious situation," Police Chief Jim Johnson told CBS Baltimore.

The teen was sent for an emergency evaluation, and charged as a juvenile with possession of a destructive device and a handgun violation, among other charges, reports the station.

The devices had been constructed out of readily made components, and more could have easily been made with the tools police found around the house.

No other suspects were believed to be involved, and Baltimore County Public Schools are cooperating with police during this investigation.
