Police: California man finds skull in front yard

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A man discovered a human skull on his property this week, and police in Bakersfield, Calif., have since found more human remains, reports CBS affiliate KBAK.

After Melvin Alston found the skull Monday in his front yard. Police found more body parts along nearby Highway 58. Alston told KBAK he's not totally sure how the skull ended up on his property, but he has a theory.

"(Carried by) doggone dogs running up and down the street all night long," Alston said.

Bakersfield police Sgt. Gary Carruesco said the remains appear to be in an advanced stage of decomposition. Carruesco said detectives have interviewed neighbors and are searching the state's missing persons' database.

The Kern County Coroner's Office is trying to identify the remains. The coroner is also working to determine the cause of death and how long ago the person died.

Even without a cause of death identified, police are treating the case as suspicious.
