Garrido and his wife Nancy have been charged with kidnapping 11-year-old Dugard in 1991 and holding her hostage for 18 years. Phillip Garrido also allegedly raped Dugard and fathered two daughters with his victim.

"People all over the world are hearing testimony that, through the spirit of Christ, a mental process took place ending a sexual problem believed to be impossible," KCRA states Garrido wrote in his letter.

Garrido's public defender says the letter shows her client's "genuine remorse" for his alleged crimes, according to a phone interview with KCRA.

"He would like people to consider the fact that he's a changed man and his story is best told all at one time, instead of in pieces," attorney Susan Gellman told the station.

She also noted that her client may not be competent to stand trial, according to the interview.

"He presents obvious issues concerning whether or not he is competent to be a defendant, and we are looking into that," Gellman told reporters.

The Garridos remain in custody in Placerville, Calif., as they face a combined 29 charges, including kidnapping and rape, to which they have pleaded not guilty.
