One Goh Update: Accused Oikos University shooter found mentally incompetent for trial, lawyer says

(CBS/AP) OAKLAND - One Goh, a former nursing student accused of killing seven people and wounding three others at Oikos University in April, was found mentally incompetent to stand trial by a court-appointed psychiatrist, according to Goh's attorney.

Assistant public defender David Klaus released the finding of paranoid-schizophrenia to a judge in Alameda County Superior Court on Monday, seven weeks after doubts were expressed about Goh's ability to understand and assist in his own defense. In response, Judge Thomas Reardon postponed a ruling on holding a trial until a second court appointed psychiatrist evaluates Goh.

In the event that the judge rules Goh incompetent to stand trial, it is likely he will be sent to Napa State Hospital for treatment. If he improves, he can be brought up on seven murder and three attempted murder counts in the future, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Goh, a former student of the private Korean Christian university, has pled not guilty on all charges. He is incarcerated at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Calif., where, according to the Chronicle, he has refused psychiatric care and medication.

David Klaus said, "[Goh is] in a state of deep isolation, depression and shame. ...He's got a deep and fixed delusional system. It's based on religious beliefs around the battle between God and Satan, and his role in that battle. ...I think this condition is really central to this entire story."

Goh is reported to have lost more than 60 pounds.
