Ohio authorities searching for "Braveheart Bandit"

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police are searching for an alleged thief nicknamed the "Braveheart Bandit" because of a blue tattoo on one side of his face, a la the character portrayed by Mel Gibson role in the Braveheart film, reports CBS affiliate WBNS.

The Columbus, Ohio city attorney's office says Christopher Peters, 21, was caught stealing from stores eight times in 2014, and is currently wanted on three outstanding warrants.

Peters is accused of stealing more than $322 worth of merchandise from a Home Depot in March, a $380 vacuum cleaner from an Anderson's store in April, and additional Dyson vacuums valued at $849 from Target. He is also accused in the April theft of $220 worth of clothes from Old Navy.

Assistant Columbus Attorney Bill Hedrick says Peters' unique tattoo and descriptive nickname may help authorities catch him.

"I would call a professional shoplifter who chooses to get a blue triangle tattooed across his face stupid rather than brave, but we believe he was going for the William Wallace Braveheart look," said Hedrick. "Mr. Peters should be easy to identify so we are hoping the public can help us track him down."

Peters also is a registered sex offender who is wanted for failing to re-verify his address.
