According to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, President-elect Barack Obama spoke to the pilot - widely hailed as a hero - who safely landed a crippled Airbus A320 on the Hudson River Thursday.

There were no fatalities or serious injuries among the 155 passengers and crew members on board.

The statement from Gibbs:

At 6:45 p.m., President-elect Obama spoke with Capt. Chesley Sullenberger III, the pilot of US Airways flight 1549.

The president-elect told Capt. Sullenberger how proud everyone was for the heroic and graceful job he had done in landing the damaged aircraft yesterday.

The president-elect also thanked his crew and the many people on the scene in New York for ensuring the safety of everyone on board the plane.

The called last about five minutes.
