College baseball player, 19, found dead in subzero cold
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a 19-year-old community college student whose body was found outside in subzero cold.
The sheriff's office says Monday that Alex P. Hendry was reported missing by his Onondaga Community College roommate Sunday evening after he failed to return home from a Saturday night off-campus party.
Hendry's body was found outside around 1 a.m. Monday near the college's baseball fields where he was preparing to play his first full season. The temperature was well below zero.
The sheriff's office says Hendry was last seen leaving the party on foot early Sunday. Foul play is not suspected.
A statement released by the college says Hendry was a freshman from Rochester majoring in general studies and was on the college baseball team.
The college's baseball coach, John Sheedy, told CBS affiliate WROC-TV in Rochester that the team is trying to "put our best face forward right now in this very difficult time."
Sheedy said the team gather after hearing the news.
"Every one of those 40 athletes that I have on my baseball team is an extension of my family," said Sheedy, who began to choke up when talking about Hendry. "Those are all my sons, and it... it hits home."
