The judge mentioned ongoing "plea discussions" during Nicholas Brooks' brief court appearance Tuesday. His lawyers and prosecutors declined to comment on the discussions. It is unclear whether anything will result, reports CBS station WCBS.

The 25-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murder. He is due back in court Sept. 19.

Sylvie Cachay, 33, was found dead in an overflowing bathtub at the Soho House club and hotel Dec. 9, hours after she and Brooks checked in. He had gone out but returned after police arrived.

The medical examiner's office said Cachay died from compression of the neck and drowning and she had been forcibly submerged in the tub, reports the station.

Nicholas Brooks told police that Cachay was woozy from taking an unspecified medication, and he had left her sleeping, according to the station.

Joseph Brooks, Nicholas' father, was best known for penning the Academy Award-winning ballad "You Light Up My Life." He committed suicide in May while facing unrelated sexual assault charges.
