New York Jets lose to New England Patriots after controversial call

It's usually not easy being a Jets fan, but it was made a little tougher on Sunday thanks to a controversial ruling by referees in the fourth quarter, CBS Sports' Pete Blackburn writes.

After Jets tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins appeared to score a touchdown that would have cut the New England Patriots' lead to 24-21, officials said that Seferian-Jenkins fumbled the ball prior to crossing the goal line without regaining possession. The score was ruled a touchback and the ball was given to the Patriots.

It was a tough call to make in that situation, especially with the ruling being a touchdown on the field. It's clear Seferian-Jenkins momentarily lost control of the ball, but it's difficult to say with absolute certainty that he didn't have it back in his possession before going out of bounds.

CBS Sports analyst Boomer Esiason, a former NFL quarterback, criticized the call on Twitter: "#Jets #Pats wait, what??? What in the world was that call against Seferian-Jenkins?"

In another tweet, he wrote: "NFL tells us that Seferian-Jenkins did not have control of the ball as he the ball broke the plane of the goal line. #hmmm."
