New Mexico cop shot during Albuquerque traffic stop, police say

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Federal authorities have joined the search for a suspected drunk driver who shot and wounded an Albuquerque police officer during a traffic stop.

Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden told reporters the officer was shot around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after the motorist got out of the vehicle and began shooting.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier says the officer was shot twice but was able to return fire. He is expected to survive. It's not known if the gunman was struck.

Tixer says the gunman fled on foot. The suspect is described as white or a light-skinned Hispanic man who is about six feet tall.

The officer, whose name was not released, underwent surgery Saturday and is doing "very well," Officer Simon Drobik told CBS affiliate KRQE.

"This is the day-to-day calls to service officers take," Drobik said. "This is a 30-year veteran that just did a typical car stop and he got shot in the line of duty."

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was assisting with the investigation and offered a $7,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The officer was wearing a body camera which recorded the confrontation, according to KRQE.

Police urged the suspect to turn himself in and anyone with information about the shooting to call investigators.
