(CBS/AP) SPARKS, Nev. - Authorities say two people are dead following a Monday morning shooting at a middle school in Sparks, Nev., according to CBS affiliate KTVN.

Sparks police said in a press conference Monday afternoon the two fatalities include a staff member and a  "middle-school-aged" student, who was also the shooter. Both died on scene.

Authorities said the staff member was trying to protect other children.

Police are now waiting to notify the victims' families about their deaths before releasing their names.

Two boys who were injured in the shooting remain in critical condition at a hospital. The station reports one of them underwent surgery.

The shooting happened at around 7:16 a.m. when children were just arriving at Sparks Middle School and getting ready to start their day. The students were evacuated to a nearby high school along with a second middle school nearby after the shooting occurred.

Police say this is an ongoing homicide investigation and classes at the school where the shooting took place have been cancelled for the rest of the week.
