Multiple car crashes blamed on icy road conditions in Georgia

ATLANTA -- Icy road conditions are being reported in parts of northern Georgia where temperatures hovered around freezing before sunrise.

The National Weather Service warned Friday morning that icy patches were possible on roadways in metro Atlanta and communities farther north. WSB-TV reports icy conditions were being blamed for at least six crashes reported early Friday on Interstate 20 westbound near downtown Atlanta.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports police in Athens were also reporting ice Friday morning on all overpasses of the Ga. 10 Loop that circles the city.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City said temperatures were expected to rise above freezing after 10 a.m. Friday.

CBS affiliate WGCL in Atlanta reports that even though showers have moved out of the area, some roads remain wet and cold temperatures will mean that some elevated surfaces will see areas of black ice.
