MTV cancels "Buckwild" after death of Shain Gandee

Updated 11:39 a.m. ET

MTV has canceled "Buckwild" in the wake of star Shain Gandee's death.

"We love the cast and the show and this was not an easy decision, but given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him. Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately," the network said in a statement Wednesday.

MTV also said it will air a special called "Buckwild: WV to the NYC" on Sunday, April 14, following a day of programming dedicated to Gandee.

The network suspended production on the second season of "Buckwild" last week after Gandee, 21, wasfound deadon April 1 in his vehicle, along with his uncle and another man. All three men died of carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly caused by the tailpipe being submerged in mud.
