NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Plastic golf balls with racist symbols — swastikas and black faces — twice littered the backyard of a mixed-race couple who recently moved to St. Clair County, Mich., about 50 miles from Detroit.

News of the hate-filled messages comes a few days after authorities discovered that someone carved "I" followed by a swastika, and then "Obama," into a Lakeville, Mass. golf course green.

In the Michigan case, Michael and Michelle Brown moved into their Port Huron Township home in July. On Sept. 25 and Oct. 11, they discovered the balls with swastikas and other symbols scrawled on them.

Michael Brown, who is black, tells the Times Herald of Port Huron "it's definitely disheartening to see behavior like this."

The couple thinks a neighbor may be responsible, and one nearby couple says they may now face eviction, according to the paper.

County Sheriff Tim Donnellon says the matter is under investigation.
