More Calls To Give The Times A Time-Out

(AP)
Today White House Press Secretary Tony Snow dumped cold water on a suggestion from The National Review that The New York Times should have its press credentials revoked as a reaction to that paper's publication of a story about the government's bank monitoring program. "They are not going to lose their credentials," Snow told Editor & Publisher.

Now, according to a CBS News producer, Representative J.D. Hayworth is circulating a letter among his colleagues from both parties asking House Speaker Dennis Hastert to "rescind the congressional press credentials" of The Times. The letter has not yet been sent to Hastert. From the letter:

Each of us swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, which includes the power of a free press. We also believe that this power comes with great responsibility, especially in wartime when the lives of millions of Americans are at stake. We believe this power was abused by the New York Times for the most cynical of reasons: to end American involvement in Iraq no matter the long term cost in lives and national security.
The war of words continues, stay tuned.
