Medical equipment stolen from family as infant recovered from surgery

DENVER -- A family's car was broken into and medical equipment stolen from them as they visited a hospital where their 6-month-old baby was recovering from surgery, reported CBS Denver.

The Willingham family was staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Denver while baby Korra underwent surgery to repair a heart defect. Korra's twin sister, Kaylee, along with their parents, Chris and Courtney, had traveled from Grand Junction, according to the station.

After a week of recovery, Korra was ready to go home. But on Tuesday morning, the family discovered that someone had broken into their car parked outside the Ronald McDonald House.

The glove box had been rummaged through, electronics, their bags, even medical equipment -- a pulse oximeter used to check Korra's oxygen- were all stolen, the station reported.

"We made it down the stairs outside and saw the car door hanging open and everything was gone," said Courtney.

They were issued a loaner pulse oximeter from the hospital to get home but they will have to pay for the new equipment.

Chris said they will get new clothes and electronics but called some of the stolen items, "Irreplaceable gifts that ... are just gone now."

Police had the family file a report online but no suspects have been identified.

According to CBS Denver, to help the couple recoup the cost of the medical equipment, friends and family set up a GoFundMe page.
