McCain Heads To Texas To Talk Energy

(CBS)

From CBS News' John Bentley:

WASHINGTON – John McCain heads to the Lone Star state this morning, but the destination is Dallas, not Midland, after the campaign called off a fundraiser there at the home of controversial oilman Clayton Williams. The former Texas gubernatorial candidate once said that if rape is inevitable for women, "you might as well lie back and enjoy it." Williams later apologized for remark he made back in 1990.

McCain has a couple of fundraisers in Dallas today before heading to Houston tomorrow, where he will make a speech outlining his energy policy. He may have some fence-mending to do in Houston, which is home to many of the country's largest energy companies. At a town hall meeting in New York last Thursday, McCain called out oil companies for what he perceived as their lack of progress in developing alternative fuel sources. "I'm very angry at the oil companies, not only because of the obscene profits they make, but for the failure to invest in alternative forms of energy," McCain said. "It's an abrogation of their responsibility as citizens."
