(CBS News) A musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book "Matilda" is coming to Broadway next year.

"Matilda the Musical" will begin previews at New York's Shubert Theatre on March 4, 2013, with an official opening set for April 11.

The musical premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre in November 2010 and transferred to London's West End, where it continues to run, on Oct. 25, 2011, according to Broadway.com. It won seven Olivier Awards (the British equivalent of the Tony Awards) earlier this year, including best new musical.

"Matilda" tells the story of a gifted little girl who faces off against her extremely unpleasant parents and evil headmistress. A film adaptation of the book, starring Danny DeVito, Rhea Pearlman and Mara Wilson, was released in 1996.

Casting for the Broadway production will be announced at a later date, Playbill.com reports.
