Massachusetts couple says “I do,” then runs for their lives

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Authorities say a three-alarm fire broke out at a wedding outside Boston just after the bride and groom were pronounced husband and wife.

CBS Boston reports that flames broke through the roof of the historic Lakeview Pavilion in Foxborough on Saturday night, destroying it. The fire was knocked down hours after it started.

Justice of the Peace Jerry Cibley says the fire began at the end of the wedding just as the bride, groom and their wedding party walked down the aisle.

"I just finished pronouncing the young couple husband and wife when we started the recessional, walked out followed by the grooms people and bridesmaids, then we looked up, and I thought it was fog from a fog machine," Cibely told CBS Boston. "It was kind of nice and then I took a closer look and there was a smell to it that didn't smell like a fog machine."

Cibley says everyone got out safely, including the 150 or so guests.

"The fire appeared to be spreading not only up the wall, but through the ceilings and through a good part of the structure," said Foxboro Fire Chief Steven Bagley, who noted the building did not have sprinklers.

The Lakeview Pavilion is a popular venue for wedding receptions and other events including proms.

The venue's website says it opened in 1906.
