Man taken into custody after shots fired at N.C. church

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -- Police say shots were fired between officers and a gunman at a church in Haywood County, N.C., Wednesday.

Deputies responded to calls of gunfire at about 3:15 p.m. at Maple Cove Baptist Church, Bill Miller, Haywood County sheriff's department spokesperson confirmed.

Police said a single unidentified man was in the church when gunfire was exchanged between them. No officer was hurt in the shooting. Emergency medical workers were called in to render aid to the gunman, but it is unclear if he was struck. He was later taken into custody.

The road nearby the rural church has been shut down for several miles. The scene remained active as an investigation moves forward.

The incident comes just two months after a massacre at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., in which a lone gunman killed nine members in a racially-driven rampage.
