John Malkovich, now 45, was born in Charleston, Ill., and went to school in the suburban Chicago area.

After college he co-founded Chicago's famed Steppenwolf Theater Company with friend Gary Sinise.

In film, he has been an actor, director and producer. He has been twice nominated for Academy Awards for In the Line of Fire and Places in the Heart.

His other noteworthy film roles have been in Dangerous Liasons, The Killing Fields, Heart of Darkness, Empire of the Sun, Conair and The Man in the Iron Mask.

He is also starring in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

On the stage, he's won an Obie award for True West and starred in Death of a Salesman, for which he won an Emmy in the teleplay adaptation.

Malkovich is currently directing a play called Hysteria at the Steppenwolf Theater, on the meeting of Salvador Dali and Sigmund Freud.

The meeting really took place, notes Malkovich, but it is a fictional account that leads down lots of strange avenues, he says.
