Kindergartner killed by bus as he ran to his mother after school

MODESTO, Calif. - A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a Modesto city bus this week as he ran to his mother after school, according to CBS Sacramento.

The kindergartner was crossing the street to meet his mother, investigators said.

"He dashed out between two cars right into the bus," said a neighbor, Nancy Haverly.

The boy died at the scene.

"Her child is laying there dead, and she can't do anything about it," Haverly said.

She and her husband tried to give the boy CPR, but it was too late, Anjali Hemphill reports.

"The other kids were coming out," Haverly said. "The parents were trying to keep the kids from seeing it, making them look away."

Parents said that more supervision is needed outside the school.

"I know I'm constantly looking both ways before I step out to put the kids in the car," Laura Johnson said. "It's scary."

The boy's classmates left candles and flowers near the spot where he was killed.

The school district informed parents of the accident in letters sent home. Grief counselors were at the school.
