"Justice for Cisco": Texas man claims police officer came to wrong address, killed dog

(CBS/KEYE) AUSTIN, Texas - A Texas man who says his dog was shot and killed by a police officer responding to a 911call at the wrong address is working to make sure a similar incident does not happen again.

According to CBS affiliate KEYE, an officer responding to a domestic dispute call Saturday mistakenly went to the home of Michael Paxton.

Paxton told MSNBC he was playing in his backyard with his 7-year-old Australian cattle dog, named Cisco, when the officer arrived. The dog was shot within seconds.

According to the officer's report, he claims he was defending himself from the dog.

"The dog he reported came at him in an aggressive manner, and he chose to use deadly force," said Sgt. David Daniels of the Austin Police Department, KEYE reports.

But Paxton said that isn't true.

"The dog ran to his feet, he lowered his aim and shot the dog and raised his aim back up at me and told me to get back," Paxton reportedly said. "My dog never made a move to attack him other than the challenging him and barking. He ran to his feet."

Paxton says he doesn't expect the officer to be fired over this incident, but he does want some disciplinary action taken, KEYE reports.

According to MSNBC, Paxton is asking for an improvement to police policy about how to handle animals in such situations, including a clarification of what behavior can be considered "threatening."

Paxton has created a Facebook page called "Justice for Cisco."
