(CBS/AP) DELAND, Fla. - A 24-year-old man has been charged with child abuse for allegedly sitting on his baby's head to try to stop him from crying.

Investigators say Jonathan Savas showed up at Irene Hossain's mobile home last Thursday with his 10-month-old child. When the baby wouldn't go to sleep, Deland police officers say Savas put him face down on the couch, sat on his head and held him down.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal  reports Hossain tried to intervene but Savas told her the baby was his and he could "do whatever I want." Eventually Savas got up.

Savas told police he was trying to get the baby to go to sleep.

Savas remained in the Volusia County Jail Tuesday morning on $50,000 bail.
