Johnny Depp's "The Rum Diary" gets release date

Actor Johnny Depp arrives at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 16, 2011, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Getty

(CBS) Though Johnny Depp finished filming "The Rum Diary" nearly two years ago, the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel has finally been given a release date.

The film is set to hit theaters on Oct. 28, 2011.

Pictures: Johnny Depp

Thompson originally wrote the book in the early 1960s, but it wasn't published until 1998.

The film focuses on Paul Kemp (Depp), a 1950s journalist who flees New York to work for a newspaper in San Juan. The film also stars Amber Heard (as Depp's love interest) and Aaron Eckhart.

"Hunter S. Thompson became close with Johnny Depp during the filming of 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' and showed Depp the unpublished manuscript for The Rum Diary," producer Graham King told Entertainment Weekly. "I am extremely proud to bring this novel to film and to honor Hunter's legacy."
