(CBS) Fans of Lee Child's mystery novels are puzzled and upset over the casting of actor Tom Cruise as Child's hero, Jack Reacher, in the movie "One Shot."

It's not that they don't like Cruise, a three-time Oscar nominee. It's just that they can't see him playing the part of Reacher, a retired military policeman who finds trouble as he drifts around the country.

Reacher is described in the 15-book mystery series as blond, six-foot, five-inches tall and weighing about 250 pounds. In "One Shot," the ninth book in the series, Reacher investigates the case of a man convicted of five sniper killings.

In a posting on his website, the 49-year-old Cruise describes Reacher as someone who "doesn't go looking for trouble, trouble often finds him and when it does, the ex-MP jumps right in, using his brain as much as his brawn."

Child said on his website that he is thrilled with the choice: "If we're going to have a movie, then let's have a movie star in it!"

Filming starts Sept. 27 in Pittsburgh. Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Cruise on "Valkyrie,"directs.
