Is Brett Favre's "Retirement" a Money Grab?

Favre is currently under contract for $13 million this season - but only if he plays.

As the skepticism grows over Brett Favre's most recent (alleged) retirement , at least one NFL writer thinks the latest drama has nothing to do with the 40-year old quarterback's lingering ankle injury.

"This is about money," NFL.com senior writer Pat Kirwan told CBSSports.com.

Unless he retires, Favre is under contract for $13 million this season - but only if he plays.

Pat Kirwan: "This Is About Money"

After watching rookie Sam Bradford score $50 million in guaranteed money this week, Kirwan believes the Favre camp is simply posturing to get more cash.

"If the Vikings get involved with a multiyear deal, put some money on the table, you'll see this go away," Kirwan said.

Pete Prisco: Selfish Favre Emerges Again

Kirwan said that he's not expecting Favre to actually call it quits and said the Viking quarterback will likely show up at camp later this month to get in a few preseason snaps.

"Until you hear Brett Favre ... stand on a podium and say it, I don't think you should pay much attention to what's going on," Kirwan said.

Kirwan noted that just two weeks ago, Favre was joking that he could play until he was 50 years old.

"I think we should be real careful about thinking this is the end of the Brett Favre era," he said. "I personally don't think this is even near the end."

Kirwan added that he thinks Favre can maintain his statistical excellence next season.

"He knows this whole football team," he said. "He knows what he needs to do."
