HyperLocal Search Company CitySquares Gets Second Round; Plans National Expansion

This story was written by Tameka Kee.

CitySquares.com has picked up an unspecified amount of funding from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the Kraft Group's Jonathan Kraft. It's the Boston-based hyperlocal search company's second roundthe first was from the eCoast Angel Network in April 2007. CitySquares used those funds to expand from just covering Boston to all of New England and New York City this past June, and will use this new investment to scale nationally. The company currently has 1.5 million local businesses in its database, and says it will have "over 16 million ... coast to coast" by spring 2009.

The hyperlocal search and content space is occupied by both large, established players like IAC's Citysearch and the Gannett/Tribune joint venture Metromix, as well as smaller independent search/social media hybrids like Outside. In (which raised a $3 million third round in May) and Going.comall fighting for their share of ad dollars.
