Baby found dead in hot car outside Texas Walmart

HELOTES, Texas -- A 7-month-old baby boy died Friday after being left in a hot car outside a Texas WalMart, reports CBS affiliate KENS.

The baby's father, who is an employee at the store, apparently left the boy in the car when he arrived at work at 6:15 a.m. on Friday, according to Helotes Police Department Capt. Anthony Burges.

The baby was supposed to be taken to a day care in the morning, but the employee told police he forgot. The temperature hovered around 100 degrees for much of the afternoon.

A witness noticed the baby in the car at 3:09 p.m. Friday and called 911.

When police arrived, they found the father banging on the side of the car, trying to get inside. The baby was already dead, police said.

Police have not charged the man in his baby's death.

A baby in Pennsylvania survived a similar case, in which she was left inside a car outside a Target store Sunday, reports CBS Philly.

In that case, an off-duty Philadelphia police officer rescued the infant after seeing her locked inside the car in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the officer managed to free the baby from the car, which police said reached more than 110 degrees inside. The baby was treated at a hospital and released to her mother.

Her aunt and grandmother were each charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
