Heady Times For Democrats

It's a good time to be a Democrat.

The president's approval numbers keep dipping lower and lower. He's being attacked by conservative intellectuals and the religious right for his Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers. Congressional spending is out of control, federal agencies are stumbling in critical areas, fuel prices continue to spiral — just wait till winter heating bills come in — and the war in Iraq drags on. Last week the generals told congress that in fact the Iraqis had just one battalion that could stand and fight on its own.

Yep, the time is ripe for the loyal opposition to speak out and be heard. Offer new ideas. Better plans. Alternatives to the here and now.

The silence is deafening. It must mean there are no better ideas…or that the president is doing as good a job as can be expected during these difficult times. Republicans need not worry. Their biggest fight is amongst themselves.

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on manyCBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
