Gunner the dog lucky to be alive after being shot
ORLAND PARK, Ill. -- A dog is lucky to be alive after being shot last week, but he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, and his medical bills are mounting, CBS Chicago station WBBM-TV reports.
Gunner still has a bullet fragment lodged in his head. A few inches made the difference between life and death.
Gunner was found near a Chicago intersection on Thursday night by two people who noticed he was hurt and bleeding.
Thinking he was attacked by another dog, they took Gunner to Chicago Animal Care and Control, but a vet couldn't see him, so they rushed Gunner to the People's Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Tinley Park.
An X-ray showed bullet fragments in his head and side. Gunner was rushed into surgery and then transferred to Midwest Animal Hospital, where he is being treated.
His medical bills are already in the thousands and climbing.
His prognosis appears good right now.
"We still need to get that infection under control, but right now it's day by day," said Dr. Matthew Szalay of Midwest Animal Hospital in Orland Park.
Szalay said if all goes well, Gunner could be back at PAWS Tinley Park in a couple of weeks and up for adoption sometime after that.
