Girl, 14, builds lavish treehouse, is ordered to take it down
LEET TOWNSHIP, Penn. - A 14-year-old girl paid attention to nearly every detail while building her treehouse -- the two-story structure has a carpeted "penthouse" and two built-in ladders -- but, regrettably, the teen forgot to check her town's construction codes before building, and she's got to take it down, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
Eighth grader Elise Truchan said she built the treehouse as part of a school project.
"It took like a lot of planning to do, and to figure out what should go where, and stuff," Truchan said. The arboreal slumber party spot features Harry Potter posters, sliding windows, a battery-powered fan and a light.
But, after a neighbor complained, the Leet Township Council ordered the family to take the treehouse down by Oct. 1, according to the station. It turns out local building codes prohibit such structures in front yards.
Oops.
"At first, I thought it was a joke, but then I found out that it wasn't," Truchan said. "So, then I got really sad."
The 14-year-old has decided to enjoy her creation while she can; she's got about four more months.
As for that class project?
"I got 'exemplary' on it, which I think is A-plus," she said.
