Conn. couple accused of confining kids to bathroom for months

Police arrested a Watertown couple on Thursday, and accused the pair of confining their adopted children to a bathroom for as long as three months, CBS Connecticut reports.

Investigators say George and Nancie Barnes had five adopted children in their home.

At various times they would discipline each of the children by locking them in a bathroom, for extended periods.

One child was confined that way from September through December.

While in the bathroom, the children were required to stand up and read. Baby monitors were used to make sure they were standing up.

Police say the couple allowed the children in confinement to go to school, and they did not have to sleep in the bathroom, but they did have to eat meals in the bathroom.

The state Department of Children and families has removed the children from the home.

George and Nancie Barnes are both charged with cruelty to persons, unlawful restraint, and risk of injury to a minor.
