Fire breaks out in Chicago's Hancock skyscraper

CHICAGO -- A fire broke out Saturday afternoon high up in the John Hancock Center, one of Chicago's tallest skyscrapers.

Flames and thick smoke poured out of a window on the 50th floor.

Chicago police say they received calls reporting the blaze from people inside the building. It has offices, shops and residential units, along with an observation floor popular with tourists.

The Chicago Police Department told CBS News one officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition.

CBS affiliate WBBM reported authorities shut down Michigan Avenue, which was scheduled to hold the Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights Parade Saturday evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The iconic 99-floor building was completed in 1970.
