Explosions rock two Las Cruces, N.M., churches

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - A bomb squad has been sent to two separate churches in Las Cruces on Sunday after explosions were reported, according to CBS affiliate KDBC in El Paso, Texas.

Officials with the Doña Ana County Sheriff's said the explosions happened as churchgoers were getting ready for Sunday mass at Calvary Baptist church and at Holy Cross Catholic church, according to KDBC media partners at Las Cruces Sun News.

There were no injuries or deaths from the blasts Sunday morning.

Officials say police evacuated the area.

Several agencies including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and New Mexico State Police are assisting with the investigation.

All masses at both churches have been canceled.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the first explosive device went off at about 8:20 a.m. in a mailbox near Calvary Baptist. The next blast came from a trash can outside Holy Cross Catholic at about 8:40 a.m. The churches are less than 4 miles apart.
