Ex-UCLA water polo player indicted on rape charges

LOS ANGELES - A former UCLA freshman water polo player pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of forcible rape involving three victims, District Attorney's Office officials said, reports CBS Los Angeles.

An eight-count indictment was unsealed Monday against 19-year-old Hakop Kaplanyan, of Glendale, Calif., charging him with a felony count each of forcible rape; false imprisonment by violence; possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct; and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery by restraint.

Kaplanyan, who was arrested Friday, also faces two felony counts each of sexual penetration by a foreign object and assault with intent to commit rape. The charges reportedly involve three alleged victims of sexual assaults occurring between Oct. 1, 2012 and April 2, 2013.

The star water polo player was first arrested on April 2, 2013 after a female student reported being raped at his residence hall, according to the station.

Following Kaplanyan's most recent arrest on Friday, he was released from jail Monday after posting $590,000 bond.

Kaplanyan's pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 29.

If convicted of all the charges, he faces 37 years in prison, according to the station.
