Ex-cop's stolen gun used to shoot 3 Chicago officers

CHICAGO -- Investigators are piecing together how a gun that once belonged to a former cop made its way into the hands of a man who shot three Chicago police officers in March, reports CBS Chicago.

The three officers were shot on March 14, while trying to arrest 29-year-old drug suspect Lamar Harris. Harris allegedly fled and fired a gun, striking and wounding all three officers. Police say Harris was killed in the gunfight.

Soon after, police realized the weapon he used was registered to a former cop, who reported that the gun was stolen. The former officer had previously worked for Chicago police, but left the department to become a sheriff's deputy in suburban Lake County, reports the Chicago Tribune.

That theft was traced to 20-year-old Andre Cummings, a cable television employee, who investigators believe took the .40-caliber Glock 22 while working at the cop's home. Cummings has now been charged with residential burglary and possession of a stolen firearm.

The second theft happened three months later, when someone allegedly broke into Cummings' truck and stole the gun, according to police.

But authorities aren't sure who the culprit was in that case. They're investigating how the gun ended up in Harris' possession the night he allegedly fired at and wounded the three police officers.

Cummings' bond has been set at $75,000.
