According to CBS affiliate WOWK, a person at the Mingo County Sheriff's Department confirmed Eugene Crum died after being shot in front of the courthouse in Williamson.

West Virginia State Police reportedly say they've apprehended a suspect but have not yet released a name.

Police say Crum was eating lunch in front of the Mingo County courthouse in his car when another vehicle pulled up beside him and a person inside apparently fired at the sheriff four times before fleeing the scene, WOWK reports.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's chief of staff, Rob Alsop, tells The Associated Press the suspect also was shot and was taken to a hospital.

CBS affiliate WKYT reports that the courthouse was put on lockdown.
