Ethan Hawke on "Sinister": We're not re-inventing the wheel here

(CBS) If it's October,  a new batch of horror movies must be upon us at the theaters. One of them, "Sinister," stars Ethan Hawke and comes from the  producers behind "Paranormal Activity."

And like that hit scary movie, "Sinister" also features found footage. Hawke plays a crime writer who moves with his wife and kids into a new house, which happens to have a dark past. While their new surroundings seem fine at first, Hawke and his family quickly discover that they may not be alone there.

Sounds familiar? If you're thinking of "The Amityville Horror" or it's countless imitators, you're not alone.

Hawke and his co-star Juliet Rylance (who plays his wife in the film) were asked at a special red carpet screening of "Sinister" in New York about what sets this apart from older horror movies with a similar story.

"Look, we're not re-inventing the wheel here," Hawke said of the plot but added that its execution is what makes the movie "incredibly scary."

Watch the video above this story to see what else he and Rylance had to say.

"Sinister" opens in theaters nationwide Friday.
