(CBS/AP) MADISON, Wis. - A 23-year-old man is being held on charges of battery with a hate crime enhancer for allegedly punching two men who were speaking Hebrew - but he thought they were speaking Spanish.

The Madison Police Department alleges that 23-year-old Dylan T. Grall attacked the two men on a Madison street early Saturday.

According to an incident report, Grall allegedly swore at the men and demanded that they speak English, then struck them both in the face.

Police say Grall denied punching the men, but acknowledged telling them to speak English. He told police he thought they were speaking Spanish.

One of the victims fell to the ground, police say, while the other had an eye that was nearly swollen shut.

Online court records don't list a lawyer for Grall.
