Cyber attack shut down police department and other San Jose websites

SAN JOSE -- Authorities say a cyber attacker shut down the San Jose Police Department website and other city web pages intermittently for several days, CBS SF Bay Area reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday that the websites were hit last Thursday after a large volume of traffic was deliberately sent to the sites to congest and shut them down. No arrests have been made.

City spokesman David Vossbrink said the websites were down on and off for a few days.

Vossbrink said all of the affected websites, including the police department's site, were up and running Tuesday and all the issues had been resolved, CBS SF Bay Area reported.

He reportedly said it remained unclear why the websites were targeted.
