Customers scam Walmart, purchase playstations cheap

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A group of scammers took advantage of Walmart's price-match promotion to purchase PlayStation 4 consoles for less than a quarter of the retail price, reports CBS St. Louis.

On Nov. 13, Walmart announced that it would price-match select online retailers, including Amazon.com. Since that announcement, several Amazon members with a registered selling account created authentic looking pages and listed items "for sale" online, reports the station.

In order to get a price match from Walmart, consumers only needed to take a screen capture of the page and show it to a cashier at checkout, reports the station.

"We're committed to providing low prices every day, on everything. So if you find a current lower online price from an online retailer on an identical, in-stock product, tell us and we'll match it," Walmart's online price match policy states.

Numerous Walmart customers were reportedly able to purchase a PlayStation 4 console, which typically sells for $400, for around $90, according to the station.

Various pictures have been posted on Twitter and Reddit of receipts documenting that Walmart had accepted the fake Amazon listings for the popular gaming console, reports the station.

Walmart has since issued a statement saying the company "can't tolerate fraud or attempts to trick our cashiers."

The company has updated the its policy "to clarify" more specifically who they will honor prices from.

"...We won't honor prices from marketplace vendors, third-party sellers, auction sites or sites requiring memberships," a statement issued by the company says. "We will continue to listen to feedback from our customers and our cashiers to make sure our online price match policy is working."
