Crews searching for missing Va. teen find body

LYNCHBURG, VA. - Crews searching for a teen who went missing last week discovered a woman’s body Wednesday morning, reports CBS affiliate WDBJ.

The body was discovered in a heavily wooded area off of the turnpike where 18-year-old Jamisha Gilbert’s car was discovered abandoned, reports the station. Officials have not yet identified the remains, but police reportedly said that the body is that of a black woman.

Gilbert was reported missing Sunday night. Her family told police that they last saw her Wednesday, and friends said they last saw the teen Friday, the same day that her 2002 Honda Accord was found crashed and abandoned at a Lynchburg intersection.

Gilbert graduated from high school in 2013 and had plans to attend the University of Maryland, reports the station.

The area where the body was discovered is being treated as a crime scene and police are continuing their search in a smaller area near the scene, police reportedly said in a news conference Wednesday.

Another Virginia teen, Alexis Murphy, 17, was reported missing in the area Aug. 3. She was last seen in nearby Lovingston, Va., and was believed to be headed to Lynchburg.
