Children found blindfolded, bound in SUV at Kansas Walmart, police say

(CBS) LAWRENCE, Kan. - A suburban Chicago couple is now facing child abuse charges after five children were found bound and blindfolded in the family's SUV in a Kansas Walmart parking lot, CBS Chicago reports.

Police responded to a call Wednesday morning when a Walmart customer reportedly saw unusual activity in the parking lot. Upon visiting the sport utility vehicle, police allegedly found a 5-year-old sitting inside with his hands tied and a blindfold over his eyes.

A 7-year-old girl was also bound and blindfolded inside the vehicle. Three other children, ages 12, 13 and 15, were inside the vehicle.

Police arrested the suburban Chicago couple on the spot. Police said they had to use a Taser to subdue 52-year-old Adolfo Gomez, believed to be the children's father and his wife Deborah Gomez, 43.

The family was traveling from their home in west suburban Northlake, Ill. to Arizona in order to find work, next-door neighbors told CBS Chicago. On the way to Arizona, the family's van reportedly broke down in Lawrence, Kan. and they lived in the Walmart parking lot since Monday.

Adolfo and Deborah Gomez are now charged with two counts of child abuse and five counts of child endangerment. The five children are placed in temporary protective custody in Lawrence.
