California puppy that fell overboard found alive weeks later

SAN DIEGO - A German Shepherd puppy has been found alive and will be returned to her owner after falling overboard from a fishing boat off the coast of San Clemente Island nearly five weeks ago, CBS 8 San Diego reports.

Luna went missing on Feb. 10, about two miles off the coast of San Clemente Naval Auxiliary Landing Field, when she and her owner Nick Hayworth were bringing in the nets on "The Elizabeth H," according to the station.

Hayworth said he thought she had swam to shore and called the Navy. But Luna was lost at sea.

Luna's owner Nick thought he had lost her. Then Tuesday, five weeks after Luna went missing, Navy biologist Melissa Booker called him to tell him she had found Luna on the side of a road.

Luna was a little malnourished and shy, but the puppy was cleared of any diseases and given a token by the Navy.

Hayworth was away but Luna went home with her owner's best friend Wednesday and will be unite with Hayworth Thursday when he returns from Arizona.

"This is not a day we thought would ever happen," said Conner Lamb, who took Luna home on behalf of her owner.
