(CBS) PANORAMA CITY, Calif. - A 70-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly striking a woman and her child with his SUV, then driving away with the toddler underneath the vehicle, according to CBS Los Angeles.

The station reports the mother was pushing her young daughter in a pink car-shaped strolled in L.A.'s Panorama City neighborhood, when the driver, who was unlicensed, hit them at a crosswalk and drove away.

The mother allegedly hit the front of the car and the windshield and when she got up, she noticed her child was gone.

The suspect reportedly drove with the girl under the front of his car for about a quarter of a mile while being chased by citizens.

The man stopped in the parking lot of a mini mall, according to CBS Los Angeles, and that's when he realized what has happened.

The station reports the child was taken to the hospital and her condition has been upgraded from critical to stable, while her mother is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
